Hope all is well, it was great to see Rory Mcilroy win again after a bad run of form.
I was lucky enough to watch the Open at Royal St George’s in July this year and spent some time on the the range where I videoed Rory’s swing and was surprised how bad he was swinging even with his new coach Peter Cowen standing there giving him some advice, it just proves how long it can sometimes take in making minor adjustments for a player as good as him who probably hits 400 balls a day ( even though 70% will be on his short game) to get confidence to take onto the golf course.
I would like to talk about the importance of the one piece takeaway with the left arm and club working straight back together ( photo 1), this position will always allow the arms and club to be in a good position at the top ( photo 2).
A very common fault is taking the club away with the hands so the club head gets too far inside ( photo 3) which will always result in a bad position at the top where the club is across the line( photo 4) and from there will come over the top( photo 5).
I always believe that if you get the basics correct and the first 3 feet of the takeaway right the club will find its way into a great position without trying to manipulate anything. Hope this helps guys!
